Church Interior

Sister Act

Performances at Kentucky State University on June 20-22 and June 27-29

Auditions will be on Thursday, April 17th from 7-9 pm at Frankfort High School. We also accept virtual auditions, for those unable to attend in person.

The audition will include learning a dance, performing a song selection of the auditionee's choice, performing a song from the score, and cold reading.

Character List


Deloris Van Cartier
Aspiring performer, trying to find fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir.

Mother Superior
The head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Protective of her sisters and concerned with keeping them away from the outside world, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings.

Sister Mary Robert
Raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice.

Sister Mary Patrick
Consistently perky, enthusiastic, and easily excitable.

Sister Mary Lazarus
Head of the choir. Least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris's soul music.

Sister Mary Martin-of-tours
In her own world, but has her moments of surprising clarity.

Sister Mary Theresa
The oldest of the group. Mild at a glance, but secretly packs a punch.

Michelle
One of Deloris's back-up singers. Always quick with a retort.

Tina
One of Deloris's back-up singers. A little naive.

Monsignor O'Hara
One of the heads of the convent. Concerned with finances, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood.

Eddie Souther
The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding.

Curtis
A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris's boyfriend. Arrogant and controlling, always on the verge of violence.

TJ
Curtis's nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact, constantly in a state of ignorant bliss.

Joey
One of Curtis's thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies' man.

Pablo
One of Curtis's thugs. A natural follower, constantly speaks in Spanish.

Ernie
One of Curtis's thugs. Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man.

Below are a synopsis of the selected plays, as well as the roles that are available to be filled.

A Haunted House

Drama

Synopsis: Frank is convinced his house is haunted and a ghost is moving his stuff around. Frank drifts between present day and memories of the past as his family and friends try to do their best to support him as his Alzheimer’s worsens. 

Characters:

  • Frank (M, 70s): a widow about 75 years old. Frank is late in the first stage of Alzheimer’s. He is still functional, but he is cognitively impaired, and he displays several “classic” symptoms of the disease.

  • Jamal (M, 30s-40s): Frank’s middle-aged nephew. Although he has his own family to care for, Jamal loves his uncle, who was like a father to him once his own father died in an accident.

  • Virginia (“Gin”) (F, 60s-70s): Frank’s late wife, who appears in flashback scenes. She should appear as a younger version of herself—the wife Frank remembers from when they were raising their children.

  • Ben (M, 30s-40s): Frank’s middle-aged son who has to hear about his father’s decline but can do little to help because he lives in Denver and is busy with his family and career.

  • Katie (F, 30s-40s): Frank’s daughter, a workaholic living in San Diego. She, too, wishes she could help more with her father but lives far away and is too busy with her law practice to take time away to care for him.

  • Rose (F, 60s-70s): Frank’s sister; Jamal’s mother. Rose is currently in assisted living due to health problems.

  • Ernie (M, 70s): Frank’s long-time friend, about the same age as Frank.

Inside Outside

Synopsis: Long-time neighbors Henry and Winston come face-to-face with the reality that we always want what we can’t have. 

Characters:

  • Henry (M, 30s) – A longstanding resident of “the outside.”

  • Winston (M, 30s) – Neighbor to Henry, a longstanding resident of “the inside.”

Lost in the Woods

Synopsis: The Stranger finds Gil lost in the woods and struggling to build a fire. The Stranger has a job to do but Gil doesn’t want to accept that. Whose side will The Hiker choose to support?

Characters:

  • Gil (any gender, any age) – A hiker lost in the woods who is hesitant to accept The Stranger’s message.

  • The Stranger (any gender/age) – A mysterious character who is singularly-focused on the task at hand. 

  • Hiker (any gender/age) – The only other person in the woods.

Not With A Bang

Comedic Drama

Synopsis: You might want to think twice before declaring The Universe is “trying to tell you something.” Gavin Stewart learns the hard way that The Universe is tired of having words put in its mouth.

Characters:

  • Gavin Stewart (M, 30s-60s) A postal worker and failed playwright. Gavin is the defendant in a civil lawsuit that accuses him of libel.  

  • Celeste Bailey (F, 30s-60s): Gavin’s attorney, friend, and legal representative at this meeting.

  • Lawrence Wheeler, Esquire (M, 30s-60s): Attorney for the plaintiff.

  • The Universe (aka “Yuni”) (any gender/age): The accusing party, the plaintiff who is bringing a civil suit against Gavin for libel. 

  • Emily Vincent (F, 30s-60s): An attorney and Court-appointed mediator. The person conducting this mediation.

Oh, Buster!

Synopsis: Buster thought he and Ruth were meant for each other, so why did she run away when he proposed? It’s up to Buster’s friend Duncan to sort things out!

Characters:

  • Duncan (M, 20s): Buster’s confident friend and narrator of the story.

  • Buster (M, 20s): A clueless and awkward young man, in love with Ruth.

  • Ruth (F, 20s): A shy and modest young woman, the object of Buster’s affection.

Out of this World Date

Synopsis: Nothing ruins the mood at Makeout Mountain quite like visitors from outer space! How will Jeremy and Terah handle their date being interrupted by aliens looking for directions to the moon? 

Characters:

  • Terah (F, teens-20s) – Teenage girl that is elated to be asked out on a date by one of the hottest boys in her class. She is a stereotypical girl from the 1950s, but willing to stand up for herself when the time calls for it.

  • Jeremy (M, teens-20s) – Teenage boy that is trying too hard to be tough. A wannabe jock who’s always on the bench, he wears his letterman jacket for every single occasion. 

  • Alien 1 & Alien 2 (any gender/30s or older) – Like an old married couple, they are constantly bickering with one another, but one can tell they truly care for each other (and cheese).

Barbie and Ken Play

Comedy (MATURE)

Synopsis: Barbie and Ken discuss how to handle Skipper’s increasingly bad behavior during their Hyper Bowl game party. 

 

Note: This show will be the final performance of the evening due to adult language and references to sec and drug use. An announcement will be made prior to the show to allow younger audience members to leave.

 

Characters:

  • Barbie (F, 20s-30s) – Skipper’s big sister who wonders if she’s the cause for any of Skipper’s bad behavior.

  • Ken (M, 20s-30s) – Barbie’s long-time partner who is fed up with Skipper’s behavior.

  • Skipper (F, late teens) – Barbie’s younger sister who is going through a very rebellious phase.

  • Talking Brad (M, 20s-40s) – Barbie and Ken’s friend, Brad has stopped by to watch the big game.
